BA&P #441
Description:
Built in 1910 by Pullman as an 84 seat coach, 1 of 51 such cars built in that Lot for the D&RG; cars were delivered between July and October 1910. 40 of the 51 cars were leased to the WP as #301-#340; 12 of these 40 cars had a smoking compartment (24 of the 84 seats) at the men's end, including the car seen here. The other 11 cars were initially numbered as D&RG #888-#898. After several years, the cars leased to WP were transferred back to D&RG(W); the first 25 cars were transferred by 8/25/1918; the remaining 15 cars were transferred between 11/1923 and 1/1924. All 51 cars were renumbered to the #900-#950 range, and as cars were modernized by the D&RGW (including ice AC, as well as Heywood-Wakefield chairs in some), higher #9xx-series and low #10xx-series numbers were applied. Some cars did not receive AC; D&RGW used these cars for extra capacity; a few of these cars were also renumbered. D&RGW sold 15 of these unmodernized cars to the Algoma Central in 1949 and 1950, including this car. At this time, the WP/D&RG(W)/AC numbering history is unknown. For more info, see these 2 threads on RYPN: http://www.rypn.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=35746 and http://www.rypn.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=37213. EXIF: 2:48 PM, f/3 @ 1/800, ISO-100

NP #4 GALLATIN RIVER
Description:
Built in 1916 by Pullman in Lot #4422 to Plan #2502B as private car NEWPORT, 1 of 3 such cars built in that Lot; the other 2 cars were the MANHATTAN and the PALM BEACH. Between March and December 1936, the NEWPORT was renamed the PURETEST for use on the United Drug Company's REXALL TRAIN. All 3 of the Lot #4422 private cars survive. The PALM BEACH was sold in 1942 to the Tennessee Central as the #102, which sold the car to the Nashville Chapter NRHS in 1968; the PALM BEACH was acquired by the Tennessee Central RY Museum in 1993. The NEWPORT was sold in 1941 to the NP as the #4 and renamed GALLATIN RIVER; the car was sold to Andy's Diner sometime around the BN merger in 1970. The Seattle location of Andy's Diner closed in January 2008 and the restaurant later reopened as the Orient Express. For more info, see Robert J. Wayner's "The Complete Roster of Heavyweight Pullman Cars", Tom Madden's Pullman Project CCR database: http://pullmanproject.com/Database.htm, and the "Surviving Pullman Heavyweight Sleeping Cars" thread on RYPN: http://www.rypn.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=30187.
