NS 3283 |
Description: |
A southbound GLM (River Rouge MI-Portage IN) has just departed River Rouge Yard on track #1 and is accelerating past Ford Avenue at milepost 11 in Wyandotte, Michigan on June 5th, 1999. The MGL and GLM trains usually have 4 axle High Hood NS units assigned to them. This day SD40-2, however, is an exception to the rule. The reason why four axles are common on this train is because when the train gets to Burns Harbor, the track is only good for the four axles units. Six axles require the inbound crew to swap out power before they can get on the Midwest Steel trackage. We were stoked. Here you can see the lay of the land along this four-track right of way. To the right is Conrail track #1 and the GTW River Spur. To the left is the GTW Shore Line Subdivision. It is not uncommon for a pair of trains moving in the same direction on separate mainlines to pass here simultaneously. |

This coal came from either a Kentucky or West Virginia mine. Denby is where the Shore Line Subdivision crosses the old Conrail McLouth Spur to the former McLouth Steel Rolling mill about ¾ mile south of GTW Edison Yard. The spur comes off of the northbound main of the Conrail Detroit Line, which is delineated by the telegraph line on the right. |

GO Transit 665 |
Description: |
It may seem incongruous to have a brand new Canadian commuter rail locomotive parked next to a Downriver Detroit Marathon oil refinery in the same yard as an NS caboose that was built generations ago, but here we have it. GO Transit 665, an MPI MP40PH-C is shown here sitting all alone in the NS (former Wabash/N&W) PB yard (Piggy Back), which is part of Detroit Oakwood Yard. We presume he was set off there for pickup by CP for delivery to Toronto. The cab is used for NS Wayne-Ofkwood work on NS Local B19. |
