"John Bull" |
Description: |
"John Bull", one of the earliest steam locomotives in the United States, was imported from England in 1831 for use on the first rail link between New York and Philadelphia along the Camden & Amboy Railroad. "John Bull" reduced the time it took to complete this trip from two days to just five hours. The locomotive was retired in 1866 and in 1981, was actually run under its own power commemorating the locomotive's 150th anniversary. It is currently on static display at the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. |

Built in Philadelphia in 1876 by the Baldwin Locomotive Works, "Jupiter" was the Santa Cruz Railroad's third locomotive. Made for narrow-gauge track, "Jupiter" became obsolete in 1883 when the line switched to standard gauge. The locomotive was sold to Guatemala, where it hauled bananas for more that 60 years. Capital Traction Company No. 303 |
Description: |
Built in 1898, this Capital Traction Company streetcar ran along 7th Street from the wharves at the Potomac River to Boundry Street (now known as Florida Avenue), which at the time was the edge of the City of Washington. Washington banned overhead wires, so streetcars used an underground electrical conduit within the city and an aboveground wire outside city limits. |
