Yorklyn Mills, Former National Vulcanized Fibre (NVF) Company Plant |
Description: |
Built in 1904 by Marshall Brothers Israel Way and Thomas Elwood, these mills were additional buildings used to manufacture vulcanized fibre. In 1922, Israel Way Marshalls son, Joseph Warren Marshall, consolidated several vulcanized fibre companies to form National Vulcanized Fibre Company, later known simply as NVF Company. The mills here were customers of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad, back when this line was part of the Landenberg Branch. However, following the hostile corporate takeover by Victor Posner in 1968, NVF was never the same, and filed for bankruptcy in 1993. The Yorklyn Mills here officially closed sometime between 2005-2007 and are now privately owned. The buildings are likely to be repurposed as apartments or business buildings in the future. |
