Cumberland WMR Station (1) |
Description: |
The statue represents a farmer and his horse which would have been similar to what would have been seen along the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal. This grand brick railroad station was built by the Western Maryland Railway in 1913 and renovated in the 1980s to house the Canal Place Preservation Authority and the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad. This railroad offers steam and diesel-powered trips during a May through December season, from Cumberland to Frostburg, Maryland. They also do special chartered photographic runs, which was the case on this day. |

I was fortunate enough to catch this locomotive running on this day, when I had assumed it was going to be idle for the winter. The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad offers steam and diesel-powered trips during a May through December season, from Cumberland to Frostburg, Maryland. The roster number of this suggests it worked on the Springfield Terminal Railway, a 6-mile shortline connection from Springfield, Vermont, to Charlestown, New Hampshire. Description: |
Here the Western Maryland Scenic Railway bridges the gap between two states, as it crosses the Potomac River between West Virginia and Maryland on the way to the station in Cumberland to pick up passengers for the voyage to Frostburg. The engine is an EMD GP30. Taken from the C&O Canal Trail in Cumberland. After doing some extensive research I found out this GP30 is a restored former Conrail 2175/Reading 3607 engine, as the original Western Maryland Railway never had any GP30's on their roster. |

WMSR Yard, Ridgely, WV |
Description: |
Western Maryland engine 502 is moving some cars around in the yard, putting together a train of passenger cars for a train run from Cumberland to Frostburg in a about an hour and a half. Western Maryland and later Chessie System operated a car repair shop in this yard for decades. The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad has given this place a second life, as they keep all of their vintage rolling stock, passenger cars, and engines here. After doing some extensive research I found out this GP30 is a restored former Conrail 2175/Reading 3607 engine, as the original Western Maryland Railway never had any GP30's on their roster. |

Description: |
One of the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad's GP30's leads an autumn excursion train across the bridge between Ridgeley, WV and Cumberland, MD. After the curve it will be pulling into Cumberland's restored Western Maryland Station. In the background, fog shrouds the valley of the Potomac River on a cool damp morning. This engine is a former PRR/PC/Conrail 2249 built in 1963. |

WMSR 502 (6) |
Description: |
The passenger train crossing Baltimore Street on the way back to the WM station in Cumberland. The signals must not be functional because the conductor had to get out and stop traffic first. Strangely enough, this train had left with engine 501 and somehow came back with engine 502. I am still trying to figure thaw one out. This GP30 is a restored former Conrail 2175/Reading 3607 engine. |
