The rear wall of the East Somerville roundhouse was glass brick which made the interior very light. The large size of the building makes the rear wall in my shot look almost straight when in fact it is circular (the radious of the rear wall was probably 300 feet but Im guessing. P-2d 3622 was built by Schenectady in 1911 and scrapped Sept. 1956. The engine in front is H-2a 0-8-0 622 which was retained for snow melting until July 1957 but it hadn't been used for switching for a number of years. |

SUNSET ON BOSTON & MAINE STEAM |
Description: |
B&M P-4-a 4-6-2 3713 has returned to the East Somerville engine terminal (Boston) and is being serviced after taking an excursion train to Portland. This may be the last photo of 3713 in steam. I shot her with available light. Built by Lima in 1934, the Pacific is being restored at Steamtown. Steam continued to power commuter trains for a few more months but 3713 pulled the last long distance steam train and was not suitable for the commuter trains. She lasted this long mainly because she was equipped to operate with a snow conveyor/melter. Note that only half the coal tower shows in the photo - it serviced six tracks. |

A CN Mikado and two 0-8-0 switchers awaited service off the Quebec turntable. A diesel was relatively rare at this time and the engine terminal was filled with steam power. |

CANADIAN NATIONAL 6017 |
Description: |
The CN U-1-b was built by Canadian Locomotive Works in 1924 and scrapped in 1960. The 4-8-2 is at the Grand Trunk station in Portland ready to power the Montreal train. In less than two months after I shot the Mountain type a Pacific would make the last steam passenger run to Montreal. |

GRAND TRUNK 7527 |
Description: |
Grand Trunk (New England, not GTW) O-19a 7527 was built by Schenectady in 1919 (USRA). In two months 7527 and 7531 would leave Portland under steam and end steam switching there. Decades after I shot the GT 0-6-0, P2k offered a model with the same number and the GT (New England) herald -- the only thing that needed modification was the front number board and handrail. |
