AMTK 528
Title:  AMTK 528
Description:  A San Diego-bound "San Diegan" has just crossed the Santa Ana River and entered the city of Orange on a typically gloomy April day in 1975. The five car train is being pulled by one of Amtrak's ubiquitous SDP40F diesels (built by EMD in June 1973). In the background, just behind the rear of the train, one can see the Orange Freeway (the "57 Freeway") under construction in Anaheim, and beyond that is Anaheim Stadium, the home since 1966 of the California Angels (later renamed the Anaheim Angels, and currently the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim). This stadium, now renamed Angel Stadium, is, in 2012, the fourth oldest baseball stadium in the major leagues (behind Boston's Fenway Park [1912], Chicago's Wrigley Field [1914] and L.A.'s Dodger Stadium [1962]).

AMTK 528
Title:  AMTK 528
Description:  In 1975, much of Orange County was still somewhat agricultural. A San Diego-bound "San Diegan" has just crossed the Santa Ana River and entered the city of Orange on a typically gloomy April day in 1975. The five car train is being pulled by one of Amtrak's ubiquitous SDP40F diesels (528, built by EMD in June 1973). Within a few short years, the orange groves and eucalyptus tree wind breaks would all be bulldozed in order to make way for more urban sprawl, and the area in this photo is unrecognizable today - This area is all warehouses, factories and businesses, and access to the tracks here is accessable only at a few grade crossings.

Lone Star and Sunset Ltd
Title:  Lone Star and Sunset Ltd
Description:  The Lone Star (on the left) had arrived from Chicago a couple of hours earlier and will be serviced and cleaned overnight by the Amtrak crew based in Houston. This crew also watered the Sunset Limited (on the right) when it passed through town every other day. This was the westbound Sunset headed to Los Angeles. The dome on the Sunset was an ex-CB&Q car built by Budd in 1954 (the info I have says it ran on the NP North Coast Limited?). It was a 4 duplex single room-4 roomette-4 double bedroom car rebuilt in 1967 with a buffet under the dome. The dome seats were rebuilt as lounge seating. It looks like an ex-Southern sleeper back of the dome (the Southern Crescent was taken over by Amtrak a month or two before). This was probably the transcontinental sleeper (NY-LA).
