Description:  Westbound ballast train BAL-727 passing the signals at Chester. The eastward home signal was often referred to as "signal 126.32", even though it had no number board. There was also a westward home signal, referred to as "signal 125.51", which protected helpers attaching to westbounds at Chester.

Goudy coal
Title:  Goudy coal
Description:  A UNG coal train for NYSEGs Goudy Generating station in Johnson City rolls through Owego behind a pair of GEs. Its rare these days to see coal(or much else) behind anything but 6 axle power, but in those days, Conrail and the D&H had no problem sending out a 10,000 ton coal train with 4 axle units, as this train shows. The Tioga Central yard is seen to the right of the lead unit, one of their Alcos peeking out at far right.

Description:  For one thing, Conrail, which replaced the Erie Lackawanna here, is itself now a long ago memory. The trees that are saplings in this photo, are now grown up, blocking the view of the half dozen or so trains that now run here each week. OIBU passes with 39 cars, and will be in Binghamton in about 30 minutes.
