Prominent here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6715, an M-1A built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an M-1A during April of 1930, rebuilt in Juniata as an M-1B by 1953, and retired in September of 1959 after 29 years of faithful service. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6715 and #6787. Both are Class M-1B (4-8-2) "Mountain" steam locomotives. #6715 was constructed by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an M-1A during April of 1930, rebuilt in Juniata as an M-1B by 1953, and retired in September of 1959. #6787 was built by the Lima Locomotive Works as an M-1A during April of 1930, rebuilt in Juniata as an M-1B in September of 1946, and retired in September of 1959. In this context, they're passing under Signal Bridge #1160 with a train of empty hoppers bound for Altoona and the coal mines of Western Pennsylvania. |

Northbound Coal. Here is a duplicate 35mm color slide of a photo by Philip R. Hastings that was taken in Elmira, New York, on 5 May 1957. Shown here is Pennsylvania Railroad engine #6715, an M-1B (4-8-2) "Mountain" built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works as an M-1A during April of 1930, rebuilt in Juniata as an M-1B by 1953, and retired in September of 1959 after 29 years of faithful service. It's pulling a southbound mixed-cargo freight train out of the Elmira Yard. Note the "doghouse" on the coast-to-coast tender. This photo comes from a color slide set entitled "Steam on the Pennsy's Elmira and Shamokin Branches" that's produced and distributed by Blackhawk Films of Davenport, Iowa (785-22). |
