CB&Q 2-6-6-2 Class T-2 4100
Title:  CB&Q 2-6-6-2 Class T-2 4100
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-6-6-2 Class T-2 4100 at Denver, Colorado on October 23, 1948, photographer unknown, print by Gordon C. Bassett, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4100 was built by Baldwin in February 1910 (c/n 34230) and retired in August 1950. The CB&Q had 10 Class T-2 locomotives delivered in 1910, numbers 4100-4109, built as coal burners. The coal bunkers were hinged and could be tilted to force the coal forward as the supply was depleted. The design was known as a Ryan and Johnson coal pusher, and the tilting segment can be seen along the diagonal line at the forward part of the tender. In 1919 the U.S. Forest Service required locomotives operating in the Black Hills of South Dakota region be oil burners, and number 4101 was the first so modified. Eventually all but three of the T-2's were converted to burn oil by 1927, although 4100 was briefly converted back to coal when assigned to the Beardstown Division. The sand dome behind the stack was added by the CB&Q during the late 1920's to most of the T-2's.

CB&Q 2-6-6-2 Class T-2 4101
Title:  CB&Q 2-6-6-2 Class T-2 4101
Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-6-6-2 Class T-2 4101 at Denver, Colorado, date and photographer unknown, Chuck Zeiler collection. The chosen date (sometime in 1948) based on a photo of the other side of this same locomotive in the same condition. It shows two cross compound air pumps over the rear engine and an Elesco feedwater heater pump over the front engine. Usually there will be associated equipment on the other side of the boiler to balance the load.

Description:  Chicago Burlington & Quincy Railroad 2-6-6-2 Class T-2 4101 at Denver, Colorado on November 25, 1948, photograph by Richard H. Kindig, Chuck Zeiler collection. Number 4101 was built by Baldwin in February 1910 (c/n 34231) and dismantled in August 1950. This was one of ten 2-6-6-2's built for the CB&Q in 1910, road numbers 4100-4109. All were built as coal burners, and all but three were converted to burn oil to comply with the U.S. Forest Service requirement that locomotives assigned to the Black Hills, South Dakota Division burn oil.

BO 72-6-6-2 #7400 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 72-6-6-2 #7400 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Sodly, this photo was taken just a few months before the massive and mighty BO 2-6-6-2 #7400 was scrapped. This was the first 2-6-6-2 built for Baltimore & Ohio as a test of the Emerson watertube firebox.. KK-1 class In the Emerson variant, a 40" (1016 mm) diameter drum ran along the centerline over the grate and from front sheet to back head. Headers at the top and bottom of the firebox were connected by two rows (190 tubes total) of 2 1/2"/63.5 mm diameter water tubes. The top header was joined to the drum by 13 4" (102 mm) diameter nipples on each side. In addition to the conventional fire tubes that extended from the front of the firebox to the smokebox, the Emerson firebox's sides consisted of 190 2 1/4" (57 mm) tubes, each 7 ft 10 in (2.39 m) long, that circulated water from bottom to top. Total heating surface area was calculated as 606 sq ft (56.30 sq m). It was briefly rebuilt in October of 1932 into a 4-4-6-2 with the same number but then rebuilt back into the 2-6-6-2 in January of 1934. After only 21 years of service, the loco was scrapped in July of 1951. The photo is from the Ralph G. Dunn collection.

BO 2-6-6-2 #7450 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 2-6-6-2 #7450 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Here is another view of Baltimore & Ohio 2-6-6-2 Mogul Mallet type steam #7450 built by Baldwin in November of 1930. This was the control locomotive used to compare performance between its conventional firebox compared to BO #7400's experimental Emerson watertube firebox. The loco lasted for 23 years before being sold for scrap in July of 1953. No date, location or photographer was listed for this photo but it appears to be West Virginia area around 1950

BO 2-6-6-4 #7702 - Baltimore & Ohio
Title:  BO 2-6-6-4 #7702 - Baltimore & Ohio
Description:  Unfortunately, the RRPA data base does not have an option for the 2-6-6-4 wheel config from Baldwin. This loco was built by Baldwin in 1934 as Seaboard Air Line #2502. Specs - 69" drivers, impressive 230 psi boiler pressure, four sets of 22x30" cylinders, massive engine weight of 480,000 lb, tractive effort of 82,000 lb.
