KCS GP40 786
Title:  KCS GP40 786
Description:  Kansas City Southern GP40 786 was parked at WEST YARD, just outside of New Orleans. It had been built in February 1967 as Illinois Central 3050 (EMD 32870) and was acquired by the KCS in April 1982, after its initial 15-year lease expired. In July 1991 KCS sent the 786 to Morrison Knudsen’s MOUNTAINTOP LOCOMOTIVE SHOP in Pennsylvania to have its prime mover swapped with the 4748, which was then upgraded into GP40M-2 4782. The 786 remained at Mountaintop and was finally scrapped in March 1996.

It was acquired by the KCS in April 1982, after its initial 15-year lease expired, and was sent to Morrison- Knudsen’s BOISE LOCOMOTIVE SHOP in December 1991 as partial payment for upgrading 16 GP40’s into GP40M-2’s 4780-4795. KCS GP40 794
Title:  KCS GP40 794
Description:  Here is an 800-gallon auxiliary fuel tank on Kansas City Southern GP40 794, previously Illinois Central Gulf 3058. It was located between the front truck and the 2600-gallon factory-installed fuel tank. The "60-17" stencil on the truck would indicate that the locomotive was still fitted with 76 MPH gearing, and not the usual 62-15 65 MPH gear ratio. The KCS installed these tanks on at least seven of the 19 ex-ICG GP40's it purchased in 1981.

Railroad Engineer Averts Tragedy
Title:  Railroad Engineer Averts Tragedy
Description:  This area, at the end of Jordan St. just west of downtown Shreveport, is regularly used by persons to cross the three track KCS line. The unofficial crossing is between a bus stop and the Louisiana State Office Building, and traffic going between the two places generates a lot of the foot traffic. On this day, a series of bad coincidences almost led to tragedy but for the quick action of the engineer. KCS 3151's freight was stopped where it is in this picture. The UP train was moving up the grade. Two couples got off the bus and started to cross. The first couple, unencumbered by a child, had already cleared the tracks. The first couple had also rushed to cross, apparently believing KCS 3151 was about to start. When the second couple (in the pic) saw the first couple speed up, they started to hurriedly cross in front of the KCS train - not knowing that a moving UP freight was concealed by the KCS train. The quick thinking KCS engineer stepped in front of the second couple right before I took this pic and calmly and quietly stopped them. Had he not intervened, the couple and their child would have been struck.

KCS 4742
Title:  KCS 4742
Description:  Built new as CB&Q 183, merged into BN as 3013, then sold to NHL. After NHL, she was sold to KCS for rebuilding into a GP40-3. Here she is working unrebuilt and in BN paint on a KCS work train in Dallas. I wish I could find the photo I took of the car trailing this diesel.
