Description: |
MidSouth Rail 120-ton crane 1600 was holding up the rear of GP10 8210 while the geep’s rear truck was removed for some attention. The crane was built in 1913 as Industrial Work serial number 2868. It was originally Chicago & Alton 053, then Alton X-39, then Gulf Mobile & Ohio 66408 (where it was converted to diesel power), then Illinois Central Gulf 100406 and finally MidSouth Rail 1600 before being retired and sold. The building on the right was the engine house, while the yard tower was behind the boxcar on the left. |

ICG Grain Train (1) |
Description: |
Illnois Cenral Gulf GP10 8216, SD40 6056 and U33C 5058 were on a southbound grain train crossing the bridge across Pass Manchac, Louisiana. The new concrete structure was completed in 1972 and replaced the wooden trestle next to it. The train will have to reverse direction in Kenner, just west of MAYS YARD, to get to one of the grain elevators along the Mississippi River, so it has a caboose on each end. The 199510 is behind the engines and the 199596 is on the rear. |

Grain Train |
Description: |
An interesting assortment of locomotives lead a southbound grain train across Pass Manchac, about 40 miles north of New Orleans. When this photo was taken, grain trains usually ran with a caboose on each end, as the power had to run around the train in Kenner before heading up the former Y&MV line to the elevators along the Mississippi River. |

The northward Shore Line District Local is about to pass the former GM&O depot, which was being remodeled as a restaurant. The track in the foreground was originally the west leg of the East Louisiana Railroad wye. By this time, it was just a siding that served Marsolan Feed & Seed, a regular customer of the railroad; and was occasionally used as a team track. |

Bogue Falaya Crossing |
Description: |
ICG GP10 8237 crosses the Bogue Falaya with the northward Shore Line District local. The interesting bridge girder was built by the Edgemoor Iron Works of Wilmington, Delaware in 1888, when the East Louisiana Railroad constructed this line into Covington. The trestle shows evidence of the upgrading received by the entire branch in 1980; but despite this investment, the line was abandoned just ten years after this photo was taken. |

ICG P-55 |
Description: |
ICG piggyback train P-55 was about to cross Napoleon Avenue and enter the railroad's intermodal ramp at Stuyvesant Docks Yard. The locomotives were GP10 8249, GP11 8734 and SD20 2001. The two tacks in the foreground were the main lines of the New Orleans Public Belt. Notice the ICG tractor on the first flat car. |

Jefferson Avenue Interlocking |
Description: |
For most of the twentieth century, the double track lines of the IC/ICG and the New Orleans Public Belt ran side-by-side along the Mississippi River from Lambert Junction in Jefferson Parish to Race Street Junction, a distance of 7.4 miles. For most of the way, the NOPB tracks were on the riverside of the IC/ICG; but between Jefferson Avenue Interlocking and Harmony Street Interlocking, two miles, the roads swapped positions. Here is ICG southbound piggyback train P-55 crossing over the NOPB at Jefferson Avenue, about a mile from its destination at the railroad's intermodal ramp at Stuyvesant Docks Yard. Today's train has an especially eclectic mixture of power: GP10 8249, GP11 8734 and SD20 2001. The freight cars on the left are in the NOPB's Cotton Warehouse Yard. |

Shop and a turntable |
Description: |
This was the scene from the departing Sunset going past the IC yard. Active turntables were becoming uncommon by this time, so it was a surprise to see one. |
