NYS&W 6 double bedroom (6DB) sleeper-17 seat buffet lounge #900 VIRGINIA BEACH, built by AC&F in November 1949 in Lot #3090 to Pullman Plan #9002 as ACL VIRGINIA BEACH (no car #), to SCL #6607. After the folding of Pullman's operating division in 1969, the VIRGINIA BEACH and numerous other sleepers were operated for SCL by Hamburg Industries. The VIRGINIA BEACH was sold to Amtrak in 1971 as #3227 (lounge seating reduced from 24 to 17), retired in 1976 and sold in 1977 to George Pins, then resold to Jack Bennet, to NYS&W #900, stored for a time on the Morris County Central, later resold to Alfred K. Nippert-Gator Rail Tours as GRTX #3193/#800317, then to the Louisiana Railroad Heritage Trust in Kenner, LA. Scanned with an Epson V550 from an original Kodachrome 35mm slide. RE-UPLOAD due to missing file. Amtrak 10 roomette-6 double bedroom (10RM-6DB) sleeper #2438 PACIFIC CASTLE in the consist of westbound train #41, the BROADWAY LIMITED, in Harrisburg. Built by Budd in January 1950 in Lot #9660-039 to Pullman Plan #9522 as UP PACIFIC CASTLE, 1 of 50 PACIFIC-series cars built in that Lot, which was ordered in February 1948; cars were delivered between December 1949 and June 1950. Besides PACIFIC EMPIRE, which was wrecked in 1951, the other 49 cars were assigned #14xx-series numbers in 1969, the PACIFIC CASTLE was assigned #1407, which was not applied. 5 cars were sold to the Milwaukee Road in 1969, 1 car was retained by UP, and the other 43 cars were sold to Amtrak in 1971 as #2600-#2642, PACIFIC CASTLE as #2605. Besides 3 which were wrecked during Amtraks first decade, the remaining 40 cars were converted to head end power (HEP) in 3 batches, the 3rd group of 12 cars were converted in 1980-1981 (with 1 roomette combined with the porters room as an ADA room), including PACIFIC CASTLE, which was converted to HEP #2438 in September 1980. UP #5524, 44 seat leg rest chair, built in 1961 by Budd in Lot #9613-230, sold in 1971 to Amtrak as #4456, converted in 1980 to HEP as #4640, wrecked in August 1994 on train #49, the westbound LAKE SHORE LIMITED, at Batavia, NY, and subsequently scrapped in 1995. Through a sag |
| Description: |
Despite its reputation as being pool table flat, western Kansas is more rolling, however gently. The 4014 rolls through a sag near Wallace. US 40 is adjacent, and much less crowded than its farther east counterparts, largely due to the remoteness of the region. Traffic really thinned out west of Oakley as chasers cut off the effort. It would be a lot less stressful all the way to Kit Carson. |

Big sky |
| Description: |
One of the things I love about the plains is how the sky seems so expansive. Now that the rain has passed east of us, the sky is becoming that puffy cloud filled blue that is emblematic of the wide open spaces. The 4014 makes its way under the scenic blue dome. |
