AMTK 502
FORT WORTH TX Jan 1974 -- Amtrak SDP40F 502 is on the lead of Train 15 as it passes the round end dome observation car on the rear of train 16. The car is the former CB&Q California Zephyr car 375. At this time both trains operated under Santa Fe’s former Texas Chief name. In March 1974 Santa Fe management determined the train no longer met service standards and withdrew permission for Amtrak to use the name. Amtrak operated the train as the Lone Star until it was discontinued in October 1979. EMD built the 502 (b/n 72694-3) for Amtrak in June 1973. The 502 was traded to EMD and most of its internal parts were used on F40PHR 388.
