Welded in the upright position - still standing after all these years. The old unused rolling lift bridge spanning the Seekonk River at the Providence and East Providence line. At Pawtucket Falls, the Blackstone River becomes the Seekonk River, as that part of Pawtucket was Seekonk, hence the name change. The bridge was the link for the East Junction, East Providence Branch and the College Hill tunnel that linked the old Union Station in downtown Providence. Also the only link from Boston as this was the mainline for the Boston and Providence before Boston Switch was constructed. The bridge needing repairs, the New Haven tried running all freight thru Valley Falls, then onto the East Providence. That was a bottleneck as they needed to do a switchback onto the Wrentham, then pull onto the East Providence. Eventually its was fixed and the last known passenger train was a Providence and Worcester Bunny train. With the line severed and part of the East Providence and East Junction rails lifted, it has no future. |
