A 1941 ad by ALCO advertising the new 4-8-8-4s. World War 2 is still several months out, at least for the US. Depicted is UP 4000 in its as-delivered glory. The Big Boys topped all the competitors, coming in at 133 feet long, 595 tons in weight (including tender) and had a 24,000 gallon tank in a 47 foot tender. For reference, streamlined passenger cars usually measure 85 feet, the same length as the engine without the tender. Obtained from Union Pacific Steam: Big Boy Portraits (Bush, Ehernberger) |
