PRR 6956, M-1, 1933 |
Description: |
AW. Here is an image of a photo by Arlington J. Wolfe that was taken from the 24th Street Bridge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on 19 August 1933. Shown here (L to R) are Pennsylvania Railroad engines #6956 and #5418. Both were built by the Baldwin Locomotive Works. #6956 is an M-1 (4-8-2) "Mountain" constructed during December of 1926 and retired in November of 1949, while #5418 was built in February of 1927 and retired in February of 1956. In this context, they're passing SLOPE Tower with a passenger train that's on its way up the Allegheny Mountains via the Horseshoe Curve to Johnstown and points West. Note the semaphore signals and the other steam locomotives waiting for their own helper runs at the far right. William E. Burket Collection. |
