Baggage #1717
Description:
Built in 1953 by Budd in Lot #9613-135 as AT&SF 48 seat leg rest chair #2838, 1 of 45 such cars (#2816-#2860) built in that Lot, which was ordered in September 1952; cars were delivered between September and December 1953. In 1971, Amtrak acquired 42 of these chairs as #4810-#4828 and #4850-#4872, the #2838 as #4851. In 1980, Amtrak converted 40 of these chairs to HEP as #4700-#4739, the #4851 was converted to #4735 in June of that year. In 1995-1996, Amtrak rebuilt 18 of these chairs to center door baggage-express cars as #1702-#1708 and #1710-#1720, the #4735 was rebuilt to #1717 in February 1996. Description:
Built in 1957 by Budd in Lot #9601-209 as AT&SF baggage-express #3546, 1 of 15 such cars (#3540-#3554) built in that Lot, which was ordered in February 1957; cars were delivered between September and October of that year. In 1971, Amtrak acquired all 15 of these cars as #1054-#1068; the #3546 as #1060. In 1977-1978, Amtrak converted these 15 cars to HEP; the #1060 was converted to #1232 in 1977. Description:
Built in 1953 by Budd in Lot #9601-135 as AT&SF baggage-express-messenger #3512, 1 of 40 such cars (#3500-#3539) built in that Lot, which was ordered in September 1952; cars were delivered between June and December 1953. In 1971, Amtrak acquired 34 of the 40 cars as #1020-#1053; the #3512 as #1029. Between 1977 and 1980, Amtrak converted 33 of the 34 cars to HEP; the #1029 was converted to #1219 in May 1978. In 2001, Amtrak modified 3 of the cars from this Lot for use on the TWILIGHT SHORELINER as #1855-#1857; the #1219 as #1856, which was retired and stored in January 2005. The #1856 was later 1 of 3 stored baggage cars selected for modification to display cars for the 40TH ANNIVERSARY TRAIN; the #1856 was selected for modification to the #10095 in January 2011. Title:
Sleeper #10020 PACIFIC BEND
Description:
Built in 1950 by Budd in Lot #9660-039 to Plan #9522 as UP 10RM-6DB sleeper PACIFIC BEND, 1 of 50 PACIFIC-series cars built in that Lot, which was ordered in February 1948; cars were delivered between December 1949 and June 1950. Besides PACIFIC EMPIRE, which was wrecked in 1951, the other 49 cars were assigned #14xx-series numbers in 1969, the PACIFIC BEND was assigned #1404, which was applied in August 1969. 5 cars were sold to the Milwaukee Road in 1969, 1 car was retained by UP, and the other 43 cars were sold to Amtrak in 1971 as #2600-#2642, PACIFIC BEND as #2603. Besides 3 which were wrecked during Amtrak's first decade, the remaining 40 cars were converted to HEP in 3 batches, the 1st group of 13 cars were converted in 1977-1978, including PACIFIC BEND, which was converted to HEP #2903 in June 1978. Between 1997 and 2000, Amtrak converted 14 of these 40 cars to crew dormitory-lounges, PACIFIC BEND was converted to dormitory #2504 in January 1998. #2504 was retired in early 2007, and in 2008 was reactivated for Company Service as #10020. In 2010, the #10020 was temporarily renamed from PACIFIC BEND to PACIFIC COMMAND (2nd) for use by Amtrak Police at King Street Station during the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and after the Games concluded, the name was changed back to PACIFIC BEND. Description:
Built in 1953 by P-S in Lot #6909 to Plan #4183 as L&N 6S-6RM-4DB sleeper #3462 PLANTATION PINE, 1 of 29 such cars built in that Lot, which was ordered in November 1951; cars were delivered between March and May 1953. L&N owned 22 (#3450-#3471), NC&StL owned 3 (#200-#202; to L&N in 1957 as #3472-#3474), and C&EI owned 4 (#900-#903). In 1967, L&N redesignated 3 of these sleepers as dormitories #1660-#1662, the PLANTATION PINE as #1661. The car was retired in 1969 and sold to the Smoky Hill Railroad & Historical Society of Kansas City. Smoky Hill later sold the car to the Spencer Chemical Company. David Pitts acquired the car from Spencer as Colorado Zephyrs Incorporated (COZX) COLORADO PINE. Title:
#800124 SCENIC VIEW
Description:
Built in 1954 by Budd in Lot #9646-129 as AT&SF full dome #511, with 57 coach seats and 18 lounge seats in the dome; and a 28 seat lounge and nurse's room on the lower level. The #511 was 1 of 8 such full domes built in that Lot, which was ordered in September 1952; cars were delivered between January and March 1954. In 1971, these cars were not acquired by Amtrak, as Santa Fe's asking price was too high. Instead, 7 of the 8 cars were sold to the Auto Train Corporation as #520-#524 and #540-#541, #511 as #523, with 51 coach seats in the dome and a 28 seat club lounge in the lower level. AT&SF retained #506, which was renumbered in 1974 to #60, and is now BNSF #31 BAY VIEW. When the Auto Train Corp. folded, #523 was sold at auction to Dick Reynolds, one of the partners in Great Western Tours. The #523, with the name REDWOOD COAST, saw use on Sierra Western's NORTH COAST DAYLIGHT excursions on the NWP. In 1986, the #523 was sold to Holland America Westours, 1 of 10 ex-AT&SF full domes that were acquired for operation in Alaska. The car was outshopped in 1987 as #800124 NENANA. Westours sold the car in 2007 to Iowa Pacific as SLRG #511 SCENIC VIEW. Description:
Built in 1956 by P-S in Lot #6968 to Plan #4198A as SAL 11DB sleeper #75 TALLAHASSEE, 1 of 6 such sleepers (#70-#75) built in that Lot, which was ordered in January 1955; cars were delivered between December 1955 and January 1956. These 6 cars were renumbered to SCL #6100-#6105, the #75 as #6104, and were sold in 1971 to Amtrak #2230-#2235; the #6104 as #2234. The TALLAHASSEE was retired in November 1977 and sold to John Brigham of Plano, TX. The car was later acquired by the Starlight Rail Company and renamed BLUEBONNET. AOE acquired the car and reconfigured it to a 9DB crew dormitory, and changed the name back to TALLAHASSEE. Built in 1949 by P-S in Lot #6806 to Plan #7581 as SP 36 seat diner #10207 GOLDEN VIAND, 1 of 8 diners (#10202-#10209) built in that Lot, which was ordered in June 1946; cars were delivered between September and December 1949; the #10209 had been ordered in September 1947. 3 of the 8 diners (#10206-#10208) were built with 36 seats and GOLDEN-series names for assignment to the GOLDEN STATE; the other 5 diners were built with 48 seats to Plan #7579A. In 1965, the GOLDEN-series names were removed; the #10207 was retired in 1969 and reassigned to MofW. The #5923 was one of several SPMW cars to receive DAYLIGHT paint; the #7118 in Klamath Falls was also in DAYLIGHT paint before being repainted to Armour Yellow. UPP #210
Description:
Built in 1930 by Pullman in Lot #6358 to Plan #3973A as 10S-1DR-1C sleeper BALSAM FIR, 1 of 13 such sleepers built in that Lot. 4 of the 13 cars, including the BALSAM FIR, were built for assignment to the COLUMBINE, and all 4 were acquired by UP at the 12/31/1948 Pullman divestiture. In 1962, the BALSAM FIR was withdrawn from Pullman lease, and in 1963 was rebuilt to dynamometer #903001. In 1964, the #903001 was modified to mobile laboratory #210. The #210 was later stored at Council Bluffs and then at Cheyenne before being upgraded and placed back into service; the car was outshopped in April 2013 and repainted in May; it was also assigned an Amtrak #800xxx-series number, specifically #800847. Description:
Built in 1950 by P-S in Lot #6874 to Plan #4140D as SP 10RM-6DB sleeper #9053, 1 of 29 such sleepers (SP #9030-#9056 and NP #364-#365) built in that Lot. 4 of the 29 cars (#9053-#9056) were built to Plan #4140D with blunt ends for end-of-train use; #9053-#9054 were assigned to the CASCADE, and #9055-#9056 had GOLDEN-series names for assignment to the GOLDEN STATE. In 1963, the #9053 was changed from Plan #4140D to #4140C, with the addition of a second diaphragm for mid-train use; however, the blunt end was not squared off. The #9053 was retired and sold in 1969 to CSRM, and was later owned by the Golden Gate RR Museum before being acquired by the Truckee Donner RR Society-Truckee RR Museum. Built in 1951 by AC&F in Lot #3442 as a 60 RPO-baggage, 1 of 6 such cars (#37-#42) built in that Lot for the Mid-Century EMPIRE BUILDER; the Lot was ordered in October 1949, cars were delivered between October 1950 and March 1951. The #41 was transferred to CB&Q in 1953 as part of mileage adjustment and the #37 was scrapped in 1968. The remaining 5 cars were intended to be renumbered as #600-#603 and #607, the #42 as #603; but only #38-#39 were actually renumbered to #600-#601. AT&SF #1474 COCHITI
Description:
Built in 1937 by Budd in Lot #967 as a 36 seat diner, 1 of 9 cars built in that Lot as the original trainset of the SUPER CHIEF. Lot #967 was ordered in April 1936 and all 9 cars were delivered in April 1937. The seating capacity of the COCHITI was later increased to 46, and the car was retired and sold in 1968 to J.W. Kerslake of Tea, SD. J.W. Kerslake had a collection of cars, 4 of which were ex-AT&SF, he also owned diner #1482, lunch counter #1552, and baggage #3419, all of which were originally located at the Bucksnort Junction restaurant in Tea. J.W.'s son Wayne later sold the #1474 and in 1979 moved the other 3 ex-AT&SF cars to Prairie Village in Madison, SD. 2 years later, he sold the cars to 1880 Town in Midland, SD. Of the 9 original SUPER CHIEF cars, 3 survive: the COCHITI at CSRM, club lounge-barber shop-dormitory #1370 ACOMA is in charter service as #800720, and sleeper lounge observation NAVAJO is at the Colorado RR Museum in Golden. The #543 was 1 of 54 chairs built by the MILW shops between December 1947 and March 1948 as #498-#551, having been ordered in May 1947. 28 cars were delivered as 48 seat chairs, and 26 cars as 52 seat chairs; #543 had 52 seats. The #1311 and #543 were both retired in 1971 and were later sold to Dakota Rail. NP #498
Description:
Built in 1947 by P-S in Lot #6739 to Plan #7511 as NP 24 seat coach-conductor's desk (later replaced with 2 coach seats)-20 seat buffet lounge #498, 1 of 6 such cars (#494-#499) built in that Lot, which was ordered in October 1944; cars were delivered in January 1947. #494-#498 were owned by NP and #499 was owned by CB&Q. In 1955, these cars were reconfigured to the Lewis & Clark Traveller's Rest series, with a 14 seat lunch counter and 30 seat club lounge. The Lewis & Clark format was the work of industrial designer Raymond Loewy, who had been hired by NP to redesign the line's flagship train, the NORTH COAST LIMITED. In 1971, Amtrak acquired these 6 cars as #8350-#8355, the #498 as #8354. The #8354 was retired in July 1981 and sold in 1982 to private ownership. The car was later owned by the Vinwood Management Company as the SONOMA VALLEY; Vinwood also owned SP 4DB-4C-2DR sleeper GOLDEN MISSION. The car was then owned by Dave Duncan and painted in SP DAYLIGHT colors before being donated to the Friends of the 4449 (DLMX) in 2010; the car has been returned to Loewy Two-Tone Green as NP #498. PRPX #23
Description:
Built in 1948 by P-S in Lot #6790 to Plan #4122 as NYC 22RM sleeper #10442 GREAT PECONIC BAY, 1 of 45 such sleepers (#10400-#10444) built in that Lot; part of an order for 200 cars placed by NYC in December 1945; the 45 22RM sleepers were delivered between July and October 1948. In 1958-1959, NYC sold 23 of these cars to CN as #2052-#2074. The #10442 as #2063 VALJEAN. In 1973-1974, CN rebuilt 14 of these 23 cars to baggage-14RM dormitories #9475-#9488; the #2063 was rebuilt to #9477 in 1973. VIA retired the car in 1990 and sold it to a private owner, who stored the car at Mineral, WA. In 2003, the Pacific Railroad Preservation Association acquired the car, and in 2004 modified it to a tool car for use with the SP&S #700, retaining 2 of the roomettes. Description:
Built in 1955 by AC&F in Lot #04-4269 as AT&SF baggage-express-messenger #3664, 1 of 25 such cars (#3660-#3684) built in that Lot, which was ordered in November 1953; cars were delivered between January and April 1955. Besides 2 cars which were wrecked, 1 scrapped, and 1 retained for MofW, Amtrak acquired 21 of these cars in 1971 as #1150-#1170; #3664 as #1153. In 1977-1978, 20 of these 21 cars were converted to HEP as #1250-#1258, #1260-#1261, #1263-#1270, and #1272; the #1153 was converted to #1255 in December 1977. This is 1 of 4 AC&F-built baggage cars still in Amtrak's active Heritage Fleet, and all from Lot #04-4269. The other 3 cars are #3662/#1151/#1257, #3667/#1155/#1260 and #3679/#1166/#1252. #1255 is in the consist of the northbound #14 COAST STARLIGHT at Portland Union Station. The presence of #1255 in this consist has resulted in what is now a rare occurrence on today's Amtrak: at least one car a piece representing 3 of the major car manufacturers: Pullman-Standard Superliner I cars, the Budd Hi-Level Pacific Parlour, and the AC&F-built #1255. Built in 1947 by the MILW shops as 18 seat diner 26 seat club (tap) lounge #162, 1 of 6 such cars (#162-#167) built for the OLYMPIAN HIAWATHA; these 6 cars were ordered in February 1946 and delivered between June and September 1947. These 6 cars were displaced from the OLYMPIAN HIAWATHA with the delivery of the SUPER DOMES in 1952, and the #162 was rebuilt to business car MONTANA in 1955. In 1978, the MONTANA was sold to private ownership, and was renamed MOUNT RAINIER. It was later renamed PRAIRIE ROSE, leased to the Friends of the 261 and Wisconsin Central, and painted in WC colors. Now under new ownership and based in Los Angeles, it has been repainted back to MILW Maroon & Orange as the MONTANA. For more info, see W. Built in 1949 by P-S in Lot #6790 to Plan #4123 as NYC 10RM-6DB sleeper #10223 SCIOTO RIVER, 1 of 97 such cars (#10140-#10236) built in that Lot; part of an order for 200 cars placed by NYC in December 1945; the 97 10-6 sleepers were delivered between September 1948 and March 1949. The SCIOTO RIVER was 1 of 20 of these sleepers sold in 1965 to CN as #2075-#2094; the SCIOTO RIVER as CN #2092 HAY RIVER. VIA Rail sold the #2092 in 1982 to Excursion Lines Limited, and the car was later acquired by the New Georgia RR as the #2000. Tom Whitted acquired the car at the New Georgia auction, and rebuilt the car to a 6DB-1RM sleeper buffet lounge as the PALMETTO STATE. In 1965, 7 of the 10 cars were reconfigured to STAR-series 11DB sleepers (Plan #6008), CEDAR CITY as STAR BAY in June 1965. These 7 cars were assigned #17xx-series numbers in 1969, STAR BAY as #1701 in August 1969. These 7 cars were sold to Amtrak in 1971 as #2250-#2256, and in 1983-1984, Amtrak converted 5 of the 7 (#2250-#2254) to HEP #2230-#2234, STAR BAY was converted to #2230 in December 1983. In March 1997, the STAR BAY was leased to CSX, renumbered as #10020, and renamed MIAMI BEACH; the lease ended in August 1998, and the car was later sold to Dave Hoffman. Built in 1955 by AC&F in Lot #4096 as UP dome 37 seat club lounge blunt end observation #9003, 1 of 15 such cars (#9000-#9014) built in that Lot, which was ordered in November 1952; cars were delivered between February and April 1955, the blunt ends were removed in 1956, and lounge seating at that time was reduced by 3. These 15 cars were assigned to 3 different trains, with 5 cars each: the CITY OF LOS ANGELES (#9000-#9004), the CITY OF PORTLAND (#9005-#9009), and the CITY OF ST. LOUIS (#9010-#9014). In 1972, UP sold 14 of these cars to the Auto Train Corporation, #9004 was retained by UP. In 1973, 12 of these cars were outshopped as #9xx-series dome lounge 44 seat coaches, and 2 were outshopped as #54x-series dome 36 seat lounges. After being sold in 1981, the #9003/#903 went through a series of private owners until being acquired by Dave Hoffman in 1992. Sold in 1971 to Amtrak as #9477-#9486. In 1983, Amtrak converted 9 of these 10 cars to HEP #9400-#9408, #9485 was converted to HEP #9406 in June 1983. Description:
Built in 1928 by Pullman as Bangor & Aroostook #100 for BAR President Percy Todd, and the story goes that when asked about what he thought of the brand new car, Mr. Todd remarked "It suits me." The car was assigned to every subsequent president of the railroad until the BAR bankruptcy in 2003. It was then sold to the Plymouth & Lincoln, which operates the Hobo Railroad in Lincoln, NH. The #100 was used in First Class and charter service on their excursion trains before being sold to Pullman Railtours. The Katy cars and 7 of the Frisco cars (#1450-#1456) were built for the TEXAS SPECIAL; the other 10 Frisco cars were built for the METEOR with RIVER-series names. In 1965, Frisco sold 12 of their cars to CN as #2095-#2106 with FALLS-series names; PIERRE LACLEDE as #2095 CHURCHILL FALLS. Sold by VIA in 1983 to High Iron Travel and reconfigured to 4DB-1SR sleeper buffet lounge observation, now owned by Iowa Pacific. The IC Chocolate & Orange is the third variation of the CARITAS unique Art Deco paint scheme. The building in the right background is Amtrak's regional offices. Description:
Built in 1956 by P-S in Lot #6970 to Plan #4202 as SAL 5DB sleeper 21 seat Sun Room buffet lounge #20 HOLLYWOOD BEACH, 1 of 3 such cars built in that Lot, which was ordered in January 1955 for the SILVER METEOR; cars were delivered in January 1956. In 1967, the names were changed from the BEACH-series to the SUN-series, HOLLYWOOD BEACH as SUN RAY. The BEACH names were then applied to the MOUNTAIN-series 6DB sleeper buffet lounges. In 1971, these 3 cars were sold to Amtrak as #3230-#3232. The SUN RAY was retired in October 1981 and sold to private ownership. 1 of 28 private cars that arrived in Seattle over several days for the 2013 AAPRCO convention train to Napa, CA.
