Album Info:Here are 20 original photos that I took during a Saturday-afternoon visit to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania (RRMP) in Strasburg, Pennsylvania, on 30 June 1973. At that point in its history, the RRMP was mostly a concept-in-progress and few ~ if any ~ permanent structures had been built. As a result, most of their locomotive and rolling stock treasures were exposed to the elements; some of them were in very bad shape, as you'll see. These color slides are presented in the order that I took them

Heisler Locomotive #4, 1973
Title:  Heisler Locomotive #4, 1973

Shown here is a front-quarter view of a Heisler gear-driven steam locomotive, graced by Ms. Twyla Jean King. According to the RRMP, "No. 4 was built by the Heisler Locomotive Works of Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1918. Unlike traditional [steam] engines, geared locomotives employed reduction gearing to operate their drive wheels. This resulted in slow but powerful locomotives that were ideally suited for industrial uses and particularly popular with lumber companies."
