Climbing St. Charles Bridge
Title:  Climbing St. Charles Bridge
Description:  Eastbound NS train no.285 crosses Missouri Route 94 as it climbs the St.Charles Bridge over the Missouri River. While the power is largely unremarkable, the bridge was opened in 1936 and is rated at 7876 feet in length, with multiple deck girder approaches between an impressive canitlevered through-truss center section. Look closely at the mid span here and you might be able to faintly make out "WABA.." from its days with the Wabash RR.

Ozark Valley On the Road
Title:  Ozark Valley On the Road
Description:  Ozark Valley GP7U sits on the line just north of Auxvasse on a bright Saturday morning. The road has only recently started working the line south of Mexico and is currently using it to store STSX tank cars. The portion beyond Auxvasse to Fulton remains out of service although neatly stacked piles of new ties at Auxvasse would seem to suggest better things are ahead. This unit (1362) would be 'trapped' at this location on the wrong end of a non-moving train south of Mexico through the summer of 2011, when it was sent off to an associated line in South Dakota.

Description:  Two units bring a westbound BNSF coal train across Noix Creek in Louisiana MO. Although it's hard to tell in this shot, the area in the foreground among the trees is set up as an RV park, however frequent flooding of this area seems to have put an end to that enterprise.

Why Bother?
Title:  Why Bother?
Description:  Why Bother? Just another pair of BNSF C44s.... they're thick as fleas and about as interesting. But then again, they're sitting in a place where I used to shoot GP20s and U-boats in the '70s. I suspect that 30-40 years some of you will probably be wondering where they all went. (that and the lighting and set-up were too good to pass up!)

Pemiscot Port Power
Title:  Pemiscot Port Power
Description:  Pioneer was contracted in 2010 to operate the new rail line to the Pemiscott County Port located on the Mississippi River north of Caruthersville MO. The route uses new tracks re-laid over part of the former Frisco Hayti to Caruthersville branch before peeling off for the Port. The effort to build a rail connection took over 20 years to complete. From looks of things it isn't very busy- there were no cars present during this visit.

Trail of the Bootheel Railroad
Title:  Trail of the Bootheel Railroad
Description:  In 1995 the BN sold off the Kennett branch to a local operator who went by the name Bootheel Regional Railroad (BRR). The line had been one of the few remaining ex-Frisco branches that at one time had covered most of the state's southeast region. BRR didn't last long as in mid-1996 one of its bridges was torched, cutting the line in two. Abandonment was granted in September 1996. Power for the line was provided by the Acadiana Railroad in the form of GP9 1610. This view is looking west down the former ROW at Bragg City, about 1/3 of the way along the 17 mile shortline.

Title:  It's Only a Matter of Time
Description:  This is the current condition of the UP Malden to Lilbourn line where it crosses Route "D" just east of Parma. Originally a Cotton Belt line to the Mississippi River ferry at Bird's Point, it's now used for car storage and not much else as it's not even connected to the BNSF at Lilbourn any more. Abandonment can't be far away.

Oran Chamber of Commerce
Title:  Oran Chamber of Commerce
Description:  The Chamber of Commerce in Oran MO uses the former MP depot for its offices. The line was originally part of the Iron Mountain's (later MP) Charleston/Belmont branch; it was sold to the Golden Cat RR in 1987 to serve 11 miles of track when the portion south of Newman Spur was abandoned. Golden Cat ceased its operations in 1993 with the tracks subsequently being pulled up west to Delta. The BNSF (BN, SLSF) St Louis to Memphis line still runs through town about a block away.

Faux QOKC Caboose, Smithville MO
Title:  Faux QOKC Caboose, Smithville MO
Description:  The Quincy Omaha & Kansas City RR ran 250 miles from Quincy to KC as a semi-independent affiliate of the CB&Q. The line's west half was largely pulled up in 1939; the small Clay County town of Smithville was at milepost 225 and the town has erected this display in Heritage Park along Main St. to honor their only railroad. The display effort is fancier than most as it includes landscaping and white picket fences. The caboose is actually the former MP 13533, which was built by International Car 32 years after the "OK Route" was abandoned.
