DLW 4-6-4 #1151 - Delaware, Lackawanna & Western |
Description: |
Here is a powerful and fast 4-6-4 Hudson built by Alco-Schenectady in 1937 for the DLW. One online source states "...fast, powerful engines designed to pull 16-18 cars at 80 mph -- but the speed limit on the route was 70 mph and the trains were rarely ever more than 8 to 10 cars." Interesting oddity - does anyone know why there are blocks of rock on the pilot? Did this loco go so fast it had to be held down in front - just kidding. Specs - serial #68910, class M-1, 80" drivers, 245 psi boiler pressure, 26x30" cylinders, engine weight of 377,000 lb, tractive effort of 52,791 lb. All five in the M-1 class were removed from service and scrapped between 1951-53. J.R. Quinn photo |
